New Project Ideas

Hey guys, I'm looking to start a new Project Build and would like some other opinions and advice. I am currently running an old dual-core athlon desktop and an i7 laptop with network traffic routed through an untangle server before reaching the router/modem. I've had a few idea for new builds and am trying to decide which would be the most beneficial right now as well as being cost effective. Here is the list I have:

  • A New Quad-Core Gaming Desktop rig

  • A Virtual Server for Pen-testing and possibly other servers based in VM

  • A LAMP Server: Web Hosting, Mail, Phone Server

  • A Home Server: Media Storage and Streaming, Backups, etc.

  • A Security System and Automation Server: Security Camera Footage, Remote Automation of various Devices in the Home

  • A File Transferring/DVR style Server

  • A Honey Pot Rig

  • A "OwnCloud" Server

A Few questions I have regarding these are:

  1. Can one or more of these Servers/Rigs be thrown in to the Virtual Server and run Efficently? Even With High Bandwith Traffic and Transfers?

  2. How many VMs can Realistically be ran inside an Ubuntu Based Virtual Box Server for Pentesting/Extra Servers etc?

  3. Would it be feasible to combine some of these within one build? Ex: LAMP and Virtual Machine Server into one system?

  4. How would you properly set-up a Honey Pot? Would it be more practical to just use an IDS and Anti-Malware Software?

  5. Can most if not all of these devices be setup within the network for Remote Access?

Preferences:

  • I would prefer working in Linux for Security Reasons, even if it takes learning more indepth about commands and functions.

  • The Gaming Rig should be able to play all the Modern releases and withhold peak preformance for atleast a few years.

  • Please list estimate price points on the various systems in your reply.

  • The Phone Server should be ran through something similar to the ObiHai devices, with possibility for two lines, Fax and Phone, and use with Google Voice and other VoIP clients.

  • The Gaming Rig should run two seperate drives, an SSD for installed software/games and the OS, and another drive for storage.

  • Security is the main focus with these servers, any and all suggestions which may improve my ideas are welcomed.
