Primary Drive Names Switched in Win 7

Good day!

I had a friend ask if I could look at her Dell laptop. (It's not in front of me at the moment, so I can't give you more than the fact that it's a Dell. I'll add that info later tonight, if need be.) She's complaining that she's getting error messages telling her the disk is getting full. She also stated that her ex was also using it and may have picked up a virus.

I log in with her password and, after a few minutes of poking around, I notice that the drive letters have been switched. Recovery is listed as C: and the OS is D: This explains why the drive considers itself full. Another error message is claiming that it is an illegal copy of Windows 7, but I think this is also due to the drive confusion. It also won't connect to my WiFi signal, so I'll need to download any necessary files onto a flash drive before I can run them.

I must admit that I pick up on computer problems fairly quickly and can follow instructions without issue, but have no formal or even complete knowledge of computers. I can typically get by and fix things, but this is beyond me. I also am fairly new to 7, so am still picking up the basics.

Barring a virus causing the issue, is there any easy way to switch the drive letters back to their proper sectors while the OS is loaded? I don't think it is anything more than that.

As stated, I will gather more information (Model, Explorer screenshots, and anything else requested.) and add it in tonight.

Thanks much, in advance.

Bill
